Motivation Flashcards
What is the instinct approach?
Believes that humans and animals are born with innate tendencies or biological forces that determine behaviour
These instincts are very essential for survival thus those instincts instincts provide the energy that directs behaviours in appropriate directions
What is the incentive approach?
Suggests that motivation stems from the desires to obtain valued external goals or incentive
Its appeal has little or nothing to do with internal drives or maintenance of arousal
In this view any desirable properties of external stimuli (grades, money, affection, food) account for a person’s motivation
What is the cognitive approach?
Views motivation as a product of people’s thoughts and expectations
What is intrinsic motivation?
Causes us to participate in an activity for our own enjoyment rather than for the reward that it will bring us
What is extrinsic motivation?
Causes a person to do something for money, grade or some rewards
