Motion Unit Flashcards
Identify stuff
Distance
How far an object moves.
Displacement
The distance and direction of an objects starting point
Speed
The distance an object travels per unit of time
Average Speed
Total distance traveled by the total time of travel
Instantaneous Speed
The speed at a given point in time
Velocity
Includes the speed of an object and the direction of its motion.
Force
A push or pull
Acceleration
The rate of change of velocity
Net Force
zero because the forces cancel each other out.
Balanced Forces
Forces on an object that are equal in size
Inertia
AN objects resistance to motion
Newton’s Second Law of Motion
The acceleration of an object in the same direction as the net force on the object.
Friction
The force that opposes the sliding motion of two surfaces touching each other.
Static Friction
The frictional force that prevents two surfaces from sliding past each other
Sliding Friction
The force that opposes the motion of two surfaces sliding past each other.
Air Resistance
opposes the motion of objects that move through the air.
Gravity
An attractive force between any two objects that depends on the masses of the objects and the distance between them.
Centripetal acceleration
Acceleration towards the center of a curved or circular path
Centripetal force
The net force exerted toward the center of a curved path.
Weight
The gravitational force exerted on an object
Newton’s Third Law of Motion
describes action-reaction pairs this way
