What is Morton’s neuroma?
Dysfunction of a nerve in the intermetatarsal space
Where is the abnormal nerve usually located in Morton’s neuroma?
Between the third and fourth metatarsal
What causes Morton’s neuroma?
Irritation of the nerve due to the mechanics of the foot
High-heels or narrow shoes may exacerbate it
What are the typical symptoms of Morton’s neuroma?
Pain at the front of the foot
Lump sensation in the shoe
Burning, numbness or paraesthesia in distal toes
How do you test for Morton’s neuroma?
Deep pressure to the affected intermetatarsal space on the dorsal foot causing pain
Metatarsal squeeze test-squeezing foot while using other hand to press affected plantar side causing pain
Mulder’s sign painful click when using two hands on either side of the foot to use metatarsal heads to rub neuroma
What can be used to confirm diagnosis of Morton’s neuroma?
Ultrasound or MRI
How is Morton’s neuroma managed?
Adapting activities
Analgesia
Insoles
Weight loss
Steroid injections
Radiofrequency ablation
Surgery
