Mormon Flashcards
This prophet said, describing his time…
“But wickedness did prevail upon the face of the land, insomuch that The Lord did take away his beloved disciples, and the work of miracles and healing did cease because of the iniquity of the people. And there were no were no gifts from The Lord, and the Holy Ghost did not come upon any because of their wickedness and unbelief.”
Mormon
*Note: the “beloved” disciples who were taken away were the three Nephite Disciples who desired to remain on the earth until the Savior’s second coming. See 3 Nephi 28:1-9
[BofM Gospel Doctrine Teachers Manual, lesson #43, p. 191]
During this prophets time there were sorcerers, witchcrafts, and magics. The power of evil had spread out upon all the face of the land. This prophet also had to contend with the Lamanites and the Gadianton Robbers who had infested the land to the point that the people began to hide their treasures in the earth because they could not hold onto them. We can see that Satan uses the same tools in our day as he did back then to lead people away from God.

[Mormon 1:18-19]
Near the end of his life, this Nephite prophet hid most of the records in the Hill Cumorah. He then gave the rest to his son, Moroni, to finish the record.

In Mormon 3, we see that God often spares the wicked from destruction in order to give them additional opportunities to repent. Mormon was originally forbidden to preach to the people because of their open rebellion against God. After many battles and then peace for 10 years, Mormon was told to preach to the people. He said, “Repent ye, and come unto me, and be baptized, and build up again my church, and ye shall be spared.” What was the Nephites response?
It was in vain. The people did not realize it was a God who had spared them. They hardened their hearts against God. In fact, the victories that the Nephites experienced only increased their pride, arrogance, and blasphemy even more. It is after this that Mormon refuses to lead them anymore.
[Mormon 3]
Who gave the responsibility over the plates to Mormon? At what age was he to retrieve the plates? What hill were they hidden in?
- Ammaron
- 24
- Hill Shim
[Mormon 1:2-3]
What conditions existed in Nephite society during Mormon’s lifetime?
- wickedness and abominations [Mormon 1:18]
- sorceries, witchcrafts, and magics. The power of the evil one was wrought upon all the face of the land. [Mormon 1:19]
- war [Mormon 2:1]
- robbers, blood, and carnage [Mormon 2:8]
T or F
Mormon becomes the leader of the Nephite armies and leads the Nephite in many battles against the Lamanites. The Nephites are victorious because of their righteousness.
False
Mormon does become the leader of the Nephite armies, but they suffer in battle because of their wickedness. Eventually Mormon refuses to lead them because of their wickedness.
[Mormon 2, 3:1-16]

Mormon said, “it is by the wicked that the wicked are punished.” What do you think this means?
One significant way that The Lord punishes the wicked is through other wicked people.
[Mormon 4:5]
After more than 30 years of leading the Nephite armies, Mormon refuses to lead them. Why?
They did not realize that it was The Lord that had spared them. [Mormon 3:3]
&
They began to boast in their own strength, and desired to seek revenge. [Mormon 3:9]
[Mormon 3]
What does it mean to “come unto Jesus with broken hearts and contrite spirits?”
Broken hearts- humble, submissive
Contrite- desiring correction from God as needed
[BofM made easier by David Ridges p.24]
What was the result of the final battle at Cumorah?
All but 24 Nephites were killed. (Mormon and his son, Moroni, were amount those that we’re not killed.)
There were also a few who escaped into the south countries and a few who deserted to the Lamanites.
[Mormon 6:7-15]
In Mormon chapter 2:10-12, Mormon originally rejoices when he sees his people mourning. But why was his rejoicing in vain?
“Their sorrowing was not unto repentance, because of the goodness of God; but it was rather the sorrowing of the damned, because The Lord would not always suffer them to take happiness in sin. And they did not come unto Jesus with broken hearts and contrite spirits, but they did curse Gos and wish to die.”
[Mormon 2: 13-14]

This Nephite prophet lived during a time of much wickedness and sorrow. He attempted to preach to the people, but his mouth was shut and he was forbidden to preach to them because they had willfully rebelled against God. He also became the military commander for the Nephite armies at age 15.
