Nephi was the son of Helaman, who was the son of Helaman, who was the son of Alma, who was the son of Alma, being a descendant of Nephi, who was the son of Lehi.

What are the circumstances of the people of Nephi in the beginning of 3rd Nephi?
The prophecies of the prophets began to be fulfilled more fully. Though signs,wonders, and miracles abound, the wicked plan to slay the righteous.
There were some who began to say that it was past time for the prophecies of Samuel the Lamanite to be fulfilled. The wicked began to rejoice over their brethren saying that their faith had been in vain.

What happened the night of Nephi’s day spent praying for his people?
The words were fulfilled. The sun went down as usual but there was no darkness. It was light as though it was mid-day. And the sun did rise again in the morning, according to the proper order, and the people knew that it was the day that the Son would be born. Also a new star did appear.
3 Nephi 1:15, 19-21
In 3 Nephi 1, the sign appears for Christ’s birth, there is no darkness for one night, then the sun rises in its proper order the next day, and a new star appears (just as the prophets had foretold). The wicked begin to fear because of their iniquity and unbelief. Some even fell to the earth as if they were dead because they knew that the plan they had laid for those who believed had been frustrated. What does Satan do immediately following these events? How do the people react?

After the sign appears of Christ’s birth in 3 Nephi 1, the majority of the people repent and are converted to The Lord. Is there peace in the land or does wickedness remain?
Both. The people did have peace for several years, but the Gadianton robbers remain in the wilderness and still commit many murders.

What is the sermon commonly referred to that Christ gave to the Book of Mormon people? It’s very similar to the Sermon on the Mount that Christ gives in Matthew.

When was Malachi a prophet?
Malachi was an Old Testament prophet who wrote and prophesied at approximately 430 BC. Malachi’s teachings would not have been on the plates of brass since he lived 200 years after Lehi left Jerusalem.

Jesus Christ quotes Malachi, “in that day when I make up my jewels;”. What does this refer to?
Malachi and other prophets used the imagery of jewels symbolically to refer to people who “feared the Lord”- those who show respect for Him, keep His ordinances, and have their names in a book of remembrance. How do we become one of the Lord’s jewels? You must faithfully keep the covenants associated with every ordinance regardless of worldly pressure. By doing this you show that you love the Lord, and your name will be recorded in the book of remembrance.
