Enos Flashcards

1
Q

What is Enos best known for?

A

He wrestled before God in mighty prayer before his sins were forgiven. He then prayed for the spiritual welfare of the Nephites and the Lamanites. He spent the remainder of his life laboring for their salvation.

The book of Enos illustrates the power of the Atonement of Jesus Christ to cleanse people from sin and make them whole. We also learn important lessons about prayer, repentance, and revelation. As people receive the blessings of the Atonement they also desire to share those blessings with others.

Q

We see a pattern in Enos as his sins are forgiven. Once his spiritual standing with God is secure, who is he concerned about? How can this be applied to our lives?

A

First he is concerned about his own spiritual standing with God. When this is in proper condition, the spirit enables us to be concerned about our immediate family. With that in place, our attention then goes to others, including our enemies. In other words, when we are at peace with God, we are then enabled by the spirit to truly love others, including our enemies.

Q

When Enos is concerned for the welfare of his brethren, the Nephites he hears the voice of The Lord. What does The Lord say?

A

“I will visit thy brethren according to their diligence in keeping my commandments. I have given unto them this land, and it is a holy land; and I curse it not save it be the cause of iniquity; wherefore, I will visit thy brethren according as I have said; and their transgressions will I bring down with sorrow upon their own heads.”

Q

Enos had committed sins and was quite concerned about his standing before God. He remembered the words of his father Jacob concerning eternal life and the joy of the saints. His words, “And my soul hungered” seems to involve feelings of spiritual emptiness or pain or a desire to be filled spiritually. As he reflected on these words, what happened?

A

He experienced desires that led him to act in faith. His faithful actions brought changes in his life and blessings from God. He prayed all day and night until he heard a voice say “Enos, thy sins are forgiven thee, and thou shalt be blessed.”

Q

Did Enos wrestle with God or before God in prayer?

A

Enos 1:2-4

2 And I will tell you of the wrestle which I had before God, before I received a remission of my sins.

3 Behold, I went to hunt beasts in the forests; and the words which I had often heard my father speak concerning eternal life, and the joy of the saints, sunk deep into my heart.

4 And my soul hungered; and I kneeled down before my Maker, and I cried unto him in mighty prayer and supplication for mine own soul; and all the day long did I cry unto him; yea, and when the night came I did still raise my voice high that it reached the heavens.
