more specific fungal disease Flashcards
3 dermatophyte causative organisms (superficial mycoses)
microsporum sp; Epidermophyton sp and Trichophyton sp
–> these produce keratinise- digests keratin as a growth subtrate- tissue (hair, nails, skin) is rich in keratin
three classification of dermatophytes
anthropophilic (man), zoophilic (animal), geophillic (soil)
most dangerous
zoophilic- biggest inflammatory response
minor infection example
dermatophyte
C.neoformans
cryptococcosis causes disease in immunocompromised patients and is a potentially fatal fungal infection.symptoms include fever, fatigue, dry cough, headache, blurred vision, and confusion.[6] Symptom onset is often subacute, progressively worsened over several weeks.
invasive fungal infection is confirmed by
istopathologic examination with special stains demonstrates fungal tissue involvement or when the aetiologic agent is isolated from sterile clinical specimens by culture
blastomycosis is caused by
Blastomyces dermatidis a dimorphic yeast
blastomycosis
serious, invasive fungal infection. causative agent lives i soil and decaying wood often close to water sources. usually localised in the lungs
why is blastomycosis so dangerous
in endemic regions diagnosis is often slow- disease is rapidly progressive
blastomycosis is a
primary disease
2 most common presentations of cryptococcosis
meningitis and pulmonary infections
histoplasmosis
a primary infection cases by Histoplasma capsulatum
Histoplasma capsulatum
a dimorphic fungi which lives in soil which contains a large amount of bat or bird droppings
symptoms of histoplasmosis
Fever Cough Fatigue (extreme tiredness) Chills Headache Chest pain Body aches
Candiasis of the vagina
caused especially by Candida albicans
