More On Strong/weak Acids And Protein Flashcards
Water is involved in acidity and alkalinity what can it split into?
Water can split into acidic part and alkaline part
Acids form H+ ions when they dissolve in water
A H+ ion is a hydrogen atom that has lost its electron
Explain strong and weak?
HCI-H+-CI-
Strong - 100% ions are released when it hits water
Weak - not all become ionised e.g.- Ethanotic acid (CH3COOH)
- Citric acid
CH3CHOOH-CH3COO-+H+
Weak PH will be weak
What is PH the measurement ?
PH is the measurement of the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution
[H+] means concentration molecule 3 read this as LOG to the base 10
Suppose you had to work out the PH of 0.1 mol dm3 hydrochloric acid
- LOG(3.2x10-9)=8.494 PH
- POH= -LOG10 [OH+]
- PKA=-LOG 10 KA
4. 2 - LOG (4.2 x 10-3)=
How can you speed up a chemical process?
- More enzymes
- Catalyst less energy
- Temp
- lower activation barrier
Coupling reactions speeds up process more efficient
