More on Enzymes and Digestion Flashcards
What are enzymes used in the digestive system produced by ?
specialised cells in glands and in the gut lining.
Different enzymes catalyse the breakdown of different food molecules
Gullet
Oesophagus
Salivary Glands
These produce amylase enzyme in the saliva
Stomach
It pummels the food with its muscular walls
It produces the protease enzyme, pepsin
It produced HCL for two reasons
- To kill bacteria
- To give the right pH for the protease enzyme to work ( pH 2 - acidic )
Liver
where bile is produced. Bile neutralises stomach acid and emulsifies fat
Pancreas
Produces protease, amylase and lipase enzymes, it releases these into small intestine
Gall bladder
where bile is stored before its released into small intestine
Large intestine
Where excess water is absorbed from food
Small intestine
Produces protease, amylase and lipase to complete digestion. Also where digested food is absorbed out of the digestive system into the blood
Rectum
The rectum is where faeces are stored until they leave the digestive system through the anus as a bowel movement.
