Health and disease Flashcards
What is health ?
state of physical and mental well being. Disease can be responsible for causing ill health.
What are communicable diseases ?
How are they caused ?
Those that spread from person to person or between animal and people. They can be caused by things like virus, bacteria, parasites and fungi. They can sometimes be described as contagious infectious diseases. Measles and malaria are example of them.
What are non communicable diseases ?
Those that cannot spread from person to person or between animal and people. They generally last for a long time and get worser slowly. Asthma, cancer and Coronary heart disease are examples
Sometimes diseases can ——–
INTERACT
Sometimes diseases can interact and cause other physical, mental health issues that don’t immediately seem related.
What are examples ?
1) People who have problems with their immune system have increased chance of suffering from communicable diseases such as influenza (FLU) because their body is less likely to be able to defend itself against the pathogen that causes the disease
2) Some types of cancers can be triggered by infection by some viruses . For example: infection with some types of hepatitis virus can cause long term infections in the liver, where the virus lives in the cells. This can lead to increase chance of developing liver cancer. Another example is infection with HPV, which can cause cervical cancer in women
3) Immune system reactions in the body caused by infection by a pathogen can sometimes trigger allergic reactions such as skin rashes or worsen the symptoms of asthma for asthma sufferers
4) MH issues such as depression can be triggered when someone is suffering from severe physical health problems, particularly if they have an impact on the persons ability to carry out everyday activities or if they affect the persons life expectancy.
Other factors can affect your health
For example:
- whether or not you have a good balanced diet that provides your body with everything it needs and in the right amounts. A poor diet can affect your physical and MH.
- The stress you’re under - being constantly under lots of stress can lead to health issues
- Your life situation - for example: Whether you have easy access to medicines to treat illness or whether you are able to buy healthy foods or condoms to prevents STD
