Microscopy Flashcards
use of microscopes
lets us see things we can’t see with the naked eye
How do light microscopes work ?
use light and lenses to form an image of a specimen and magnify it which lets use see individual cells and large subcellular structures e.g. nuclei
How do electron microscopes work ?
use electron instead of light to form an image, they have much higher magnification then light microscopes and higher resolution.
Define resolution
Ability to distinguish between 2 points
What can electron microscopes do that light microscopes can’t ?
lets us see much smaller things in more detail like internal structure of mitochondria or chloroplast but also lets us see tinier things like ribosomes and plasmids.
Magnification formula
Magnification = image size / real size
micrometres μm to mm and cm
/ 1000
/ 10 000
