Diphtheria

A

a serious disease caused by a toxin made by bacteria that causes a thick coating in the back of the nose or throat that makes it hard to breathe/swallow. Can be deadly.

Tetanus (lockjaw)

A

causes painful tightening of the muscles, usually all over the body which can lead to ‘locking’ of the jaw. Tetanus leads to death in 2 of 10 cases.

Pertussis (whooping cough)

A

a highly contagious respiratory disease known for uncontrollable, violent coughing; hard to breathe. After fits of many coughs, someone with pertussis often needs to take deep breaths; whooping sound. Pertussis affects infants and young children commonly. Can be fatal.

Hepatitis A

A

a serious liver disease caused by the hepatitis A virus. Children with virus often have 0 symptoms, but can pass it on to others, who can get sick.

Hepatitis B

A

liver disease resulting from infection with Hepatitis B virus. Ranges from mild to serious and lifelog. Usually spread from blood and semen or body fluid, when that enters the body from infected person.

Haemophilus (Influenzae)

A

bacterium that can cause severe infection, mostly in infants and children younger than 5. Can be a lifelong disability and can be deadly. It does not cause influenza.

Polio

A

contagious viral illness that in its most severe form causes paralysis, difficulty breathing and sometimes death. May affect spinal cord causing muscle weakness and paralysis.

Measles

A

highly contagious viral disease that can be serious or fatal. Begins with fever that lasts for days, followed by cough, runny, and pink eye. A rash starts on the face and upper neck, spreads down the back and trunk, then extends to the arms and hands, as well as legs and feet. After 5 days, the rash fades in the same order it appeared. Some cases come with pneumonia and encephalitis (inflammation of brain)

Mumps

A

a contagious disease that leads to painful swelling of salivary glands. Starts with fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, and loss of appetite. After that, salivary glands under the ears become swollen and tender. It can last 7-10 days. Complications are rare.

Rubella (German Measles), Three Day Measles

A

contagious viral infection known by red rash affecting skin and lymph nodes. Usually transmitted by droplets from nose or throat that others breathe in, but also through a pregnant woman’s bloodstream.

Varicella (Chicken Pox)

A

common childhood disease that is normally mild, but can be serious, usually in infants and adults. The chickenpox can be spread through air, or fluid contact. Can lead to skin infection, scars, pneumonia, brain damage, or death.
