Participants were given for passages to shadow participants, then completed a dichotic, listening task. Participants had a message on Ryanair that they had to shadow. Shortly after a short list of simple words was faded in the other ear. The shortlist was presented 35 times participants then were asked to free recall as much of the non-attended message as they could then they were given the recognition task. This task involve 21 words, seven from the shadowed message and seven from the short list of words.

We only attend to one message at a time. Other information is rejected or blocked for unconscious processing.
