Methodological Issues Flashcards
Research methods
Lab experiments allow control over extraneous variables. Therefore it is easier to establish cause-and-effect. However, this degree of control means that the research lacks ecological validity
Sampling
The study may lack population validity because of sampling bias. This means that the sample is not representative and the findings cannot be generalised to all people.
Ethnocentrism
Judging another culture, solely by the values and standards of one’s own culture
Ethical considerations
This refers to what is acceptable or not acceptable to do with your participants
Validity
Refers to how accurately something measures what it claims to be measuring
Type of data
Quantitative data is numerical in nature it is easy to analyse and qualitative data and makes it easy to make comparisons between the different conditions of an experiment
Reliability
This refers to consistency within the research
