Bandura Flashcards
Background
Angela wanted to see if children will imitate the behaviour of a role model, and if there were gender differences in amount of aggressive behaviour imitated
What design did bandura use?
Match/independent measures design
What method did use?
Laboratory experiment
What was the sample
- Children will use from the Stanford University Nursery School.
Method
The baseline level of aggression was measured so that there would be a mix of different aggression levels in the different conditions. Children had either no model and an aggressive model or an aggressive model in the aggressive condition. They saw the model hit and punch a bobo doll and use verbally aggressive statements For nine minutes, all the children were subjected to mild aggression by having toys taken away from them for 20 minutes. The observer noted the number of imitated aggressive acts both physical and verbal.
Results
Generally boys imitated more physical aggression than girls, and it was a higher if they saw a male model
Boy, singing, aggressive, male model was 25.4 compared to 12.8 when the model is female
Children, seeing an aggressive model showed more aggressive acts than those. Seeing a non-aggressive boys in the male aggressive condition, 25.4 compared to 1.5 in non-aggressive
Conclusion
Children learn through observation an imitation, and both physical aggression is more likely to be learnt from a male model than a female one. Both boys and girls are more likely to learn, verbally aggressive behaviour from the same sex more than the opposite gender model.
