Moral Development Flashcards
Define morality
An understanding of the difference between ‘right’ and ‘wrong’
How did Piaget study stages of moral development?
He got children to make judgement about the naughtiness of 2 boys- one had good intentions but large damage and one had bad intentions but small damage
Who are moral realists?
Pre-operational children below 7 whose judgments are based on the scale of damage
Who are moral subjectivists?
Concrete operational children above 7 whose judgements are based on the intention of the protagonist
What stages are at the preconventional morality level (according to Kohlberg?)
Punishment = Wrong, Reward = Right
What stages are at the Conventional morality level?
Consider intentions, and obedience to authority
What stages are at the Postconventional morality level?
Morally vs legally right and consider multiple views
In the experiment of prosocial behaviour, what did 6 and 10 month old infants prefer?
They preferred the helper over the hinderer
In terms of helping, what did infants tend to understand?
They seem to understand others’ helping behaviours before they are able to help
At what age do infants engage in helping behaviours?
18 months
What do young children understand that is ‘right’? (in terms of sharing)
To share equally
At what age do children adhere to fairness principles?
7-8 years
How much of antisocial behaviour is due to genetic influences?
32%
How much of our antisocial behaviour is due to our environmental influences?
43%
What are some environmental influences on antisocial behaviour?
Style of parenting, child attachment and peer group influences
What did the longitudinal study find about antisocial behaviour on children watching TV?
8 yr olds who stated by liked violent TV programmes were rated by peers as being most aggressive (the most aggressive children rated violent programmes as being more lifelike)
What was one longitudinal follow up of watching violent TV?
Watching violent TV at age 8 correlated with ratings of aggression at age 19 and various antisocial behaviours at age 30
What was another finding on children watching violent TV, then watching a staged fight between 2 other findings?
Those who watched the violent TV responded less emotionally, suggesting they had been de-sensitized
