Memory 1 Flashcards
What is free recall?
Reproducing material from memory in an unconstrained way
What is cued recall?
Reproducing a specific item from memory when provided with a specific cue
Define recognition
Deciding whether you’ve seen something previously when it is presented to you again
What types of test are Free recall, Cued recall and Recognition?
Explicit tests of memory
What is implicit tests of memory?
The PP doesn’t know their memory is being tested
What do we assume about memory in context to labs and real world?
The same cognitive processes are used in lab tests and remembering events from your own life
Define Primary Memory
First time memory- short term/ sensory memory (learning it for the first time)
Define secondary memory
Knowledge of a former state of mind after is already dropped from consciousness- long-term memory
Typically how long would sensory memory last?
Milliseconds
Typically how long would short-term memory last?
Seconds
Typically how long would long-term memory last?
Hours/ Months
Typically how long would semantic memory last?
Months/ Years
What did Atkinson and Shiffrin describe?
A clear split between 3 memory systems- sensory registers, short term memory and long term memory
