Q

What is our Moons general appearance? (5)

A

The moons surface is not flat and smooth. It has mountains, flat areas and craters. Scientist think these craters may have been formed by large rocky objects that crashed into the moon years ago.

Q

Give information on the rotation of the moon. (5)

A

It is the closest object to the Earth in the Solar System. The moon rotates on its own axis and takes 28 days to rotate once. This means that in almost a month the moon has rotated once while the Earth has rotated 28 times. It takes the moon the same amount of time to revolve around the Earth as it does to turn on it’s own axis/orbit.

Q

Explain why we always see the same side of the Moon.

A

As the Moon rotates, all sides of it face the Sun at the same time. However, because the time taken to rotate and revolve are the same, the same side of the Moon always faces the Earth.
