Moon Flashcards
What’s the diameter of the Moon?
3 474 km
What is the rotational and orbital period of the Moon?
27.3 days (meaning we only ever see one side)
What’s the length of the lunar cycle?
29.5 days, 2 days longer due to the sun moving as well causing the moon to have to move more to get into the alignment it needs to start the cycle again.
Why is there no atmosphere on the moon?
The gravity is too weak
What are Seas (maria)?
Dark patches on the moon (no actual water) e.g. sea of storms (oceanus proceliarum). they are formed when the the moon was cooling from molten rock. It shrank at different rates causing basins.
What are Highlands (terrae)?
Lighter parts of the moon, named after mountains on earth e.g. the Alps.
What are Craters?
caused by meteors crashing into the moon e.g. Webb and Moltke Crater.
What are Rays?
When meteors crash into the surface debris gets strewn out around the crater.
What are Rilles?
Valleys on the moon.
What are Wrinkle ridges?
found in “graben”/ditch. Large ridges caused by eruptions.
What are Domes?
A type of shield volcano found on the surface of the moon. Wide + rounded with gentle slopes e.g. milichivis pi
What are Mascons?
Mass concentration is a region of the moons crust that contains a gravitational anomaly
which side of the moon has the thicker crust? (causing the two face to be so different)
The far side.
