A
- effective for 75% bipolar patients
- not for acute treatment
-augment for depression with other drugs
dose related SE: RENAL, essential TREMOR, impaired urine concentration, cognitive dulling, nausea, diarrhea, delirium, seizures
idiosycratic SE: exacerbate psoriasis, alopecia, facial rash
40% of acute episodes dont respond (use haloperidol)
poor prognosis: agitated manic state, bipolar mixed states, comorbid substance abuse (for all these use anticonvulsants like valproate or carbamazepine)
