Mood Disorders and Addiction Flashcards
mood disorders & SUD co-occur often and together cause worse medical and social outcomes. therefore it is important to treat both depression and sud
oke
the high comorbidity of sud and mood disorders may be due to…
common symptoms between the disorders that can be mistakenly diagnosed as co-occuring MD
2 types we can diagnose
- MD that is independent of SUD
- substance-induced MD
characteristics of independent MD
- more excessive symptoms than expected based on type, amount and duration of use
- onset of MD symptoms precedes the use
- MD symptoms persist for a period of time (more than 1 week) after termination of intoxication or acute withdrawal
- MD symptoms emerge during a period of stable or occasional consumption
- history of MD in absence of SUD
- family history of MD
- history of good response to antidepressant treatments in the past
characteristics of substance-induced MD
- the episode occurs entirely during a period of heavy SUD or within the first 4 weeks of abstinence
- substance used is relevant to the disorders
- the symptoms are greater than expected from intoxication or withdrawal
- MD symptoms occur during a period of increased consumption
people affected by MD are more vulnerable to developing SUD and the same applies the other way around.
oke
co-occurence of SUD and MD is a predictor of clinical severity: a more severe clinical couse, less treatment response and poorer prognosis for both disorders overall. also higher prevalence of suicides
oke
wat weten we over antidepressants and MD with SUD
- effective for alcohol abuse, not cocaine or opiate dependence. ook geen SSRIs
- treating the MD does not improve SUD
combined medication
combining naltrexone (alcohol dependence) and sertraline (depression) can reduce both depression and excessive drinking
hoe zou je MD en SUD met psychotherapie kunnen treaten
CBT & MI (however, effect sizes appear smaller than those of antidepressant treatments..)
in most european countries, substance abuse and mental illnesses are treated in separate health networks, and in many cases ebstinence from drug use is required to be admitted to treatment for depression. to the …. model this should not be the case
integrated treatment model
integrated treatment model=
the idea that a simultaneous and coordinated treatmetn of both addictive and affective disorders is needed to maximize treatment adherence and outcomes.
