What is SAD?
What is the diagnostic criteria for SAD (Seasonal Affective disorder)
SAD = Is a non DSM diagnosis, but rather a specifier of “with seasonal pattern” that gets applied to bipolar or MDD.
SAD criteria = Two depressive episodes in the same season, in the previous 2 years, with complete resolution in between episodes
AND
seasonal depressive episodes must outweigh non-seasonal depressive episodes in lifetime.
What is the preferred treatment of Seasonal Affective Disorder?
What type of appetite cravings are typical of SAD episodes?
Light therapy
CARB cravings
What adverse outcome can occur in light therapy for SAD?
Can precipitate hypomania or mania.
What is LOGORRHEA and in what disease do you commonly see?
Excessive, uncontrolled talking. Commonly seen in mania.
Seasonal Affective Disorder is often characterized by what depressive symptoms? (Hint: vitals sense changes)
Hyperphagia (especially carb cravings), hypersomnia, and psychomotor retardation.
For SAD light therapy….How long should you do treatment per day?
20-30 min a day during the season you are depressed (fall and/or winter)
How does age effect suicide risk?
Increases risk overall. Less likely to attempt but more likely to succeed.
