Leukotriene receptor agonist
What are Montelukast’s indications?
Asthma, prophylaxis and chronic treatment
Seasonal and perennial rhinitis
Exercise induced bronchospasm, prevention
What is Montelukast’s usual adult dose?
Children 15y/o and older plus adults: 10mg once daily
6y/o-14y/o: 5mg once daily
What are Montelukast’s side effects?
Headache, GI (nausea, diarrhea), dizziness/fatigue, muscle weakness
What are Montelukast’s monitoring parameters?
Pulmonary function
Mood or behavior (including suicidal thinking/behavior)
What are Montelukast’s available dosage forms?
Oral tablet: 10mg
Oral chewable tablet: 4mg, 5mg
Oral granules: 4mg
What are Montelukast’s patient counseling points?
Take daily in the evening when treating asthma (anytime for allergic rhinitis)
Can mix granules with applesauce, formula, breast milk, ice cream, carrots, and rice (do NOT add to other liquids or foods): administer within 15 minutes of opening packet
