What is Albuterol’s therapeutic category?
Beta 2 adrenergic agonist
What are Albuterol’s indications?
Treatment and prevention of bronchospasm or asthma
Prevention of exercise induced bronchospasm
What is Albuterol’s usual adult dosing range?
2 inhalations every 4-6 hours as needed.
MAX: 12 inhalations a day
Oral tablets/syrup: 2-4mg/dose 3-4 times daily
MAX: 12y/o 32 mg/day 12-6y/o 24 mg 2-6y/o 12 mg
Nebulizing soln: 2.5 mg every 4-8 H as needed
What are Albuterol’s side effects?
CNS stimulation, dizziness, nervousness, headache
What are Albuterol’s monitoring parameters?
Pulmonary function, BP, HR, CNS stimulation
What are Albuterol’s available dosage forms?
Oral tablet: 2mg, 4mg ER: 4mg, 8mg Syrup: 2mg/5ml Metered dose inhaler: 90 mcg/puff Nebulizing soln (mg/3ml): 2.5 mg, 1.25 mg, .63 mg, 2.5mg/0.5 ml Concentrated soln: 100mg/20 ml
What are Albuterol’s counseling points?
Avoid or limit caffeine
Inhaler: shake well and prime prior to first use if not in use for > 2 weeks; wait 1 full minute between inhalations; clean inhaler at least once weekly.
If using multiple inhaler medications, use Albuterol first, wait 5 mins between meds
Nebulizing soln: dilute concentrated soln
