What are the characteristics of the egg?
triangular shape, 55-75 micrometers
What is the life cycle?
Mature segments pass in feces -> disintegrate and release eggs -> ingested by orbatid mite -> develop to cysticercoids -> infected mite is eaten by the final host -> scolex attaches to small intestine -> develop to adult.
What is PPP?
25-45 days (species dependent)
What are clinical signs?
Heavy infection: unthriftiness, diarrhea, intestinal obstruction (kids & lamb); can be non-pathogenic
what is the diagnosis?
Proglottids in feces
What is the treatment & prevention?
albendazole, praziquantel (off label), weanling treatment
