Momentum Flashcards
What is momentum ?
It is the tendency of a body to continue to move in a straight line at constant speed
When is it easy to change the motion of an object ?
If it has a low momentum
Equation for momentum
Momentum = mass x velocity
What is the momentum of two objects travelling in the same direction
Their momentums are added together
What are the momentums of two objects travelling in opposite directions ?
Their momentums are subtracted from each other
What is always the same before and after the collision ?
Momentum is conserved, and then I mentioned before and after the collision is always the same
Equation for conservation of momentum
Momentum = (mass1 x velocity1) + (mass2 x velocity2)
What is an elastic collision ?
In which connected energy is conserved
What is an inelastic collision ?
In which some kinetic energy is transferred, usually as heat
What are opposite of collisions ?
Explosions
Equation for change in the momentum
Change in
Momentum = (mass - velocity at the end) - (mass - velocity at the beginning)
What is the equation linking Force, time, mass and velocity
Force x time = (mass - velocity at end) - (mass - velocity at beginning)
Equation linking force, time and change in the momentum
Force x time = change in momentum
What is Newton’s third law ?
For every force that acts, there is an equal size reaction force, of the same type, the acting opposite direction
