Energy And Potential Difference In Circuits Flashcards
What is current ?
Current measures how fast charge flows around a circuit
What is current measured in?
Amps (A)
What is one amp equal too ?
One amp is equal to one columb of charge flowing per second
What is the equation linking current charge and time ?
Current = charge/time
What is voltage ?
Voltage measures how much energy the charge flowing around the circuit has
What is voltage measured in ?
Volts (V)
What is one volt equal to ?
One volt is one joule of energy per columb of charge flowing
What does voltage do ?
Voltage pushes charge around a circuit creating current. The higher the voltage the higher the current.
What is the equation linking voltage, resistance and current ?
Voltage = resistance x current
What does resistance do ?
• resistance opposes the flow of current around a circuit
As resistance increases what decreases ?
Current decreases
As resistance increases what also increases to maintain a given current ?
Voltage must increase to maintain a given current
What is resistance measured in ?
Ohms
What are voltage and current to each other ?
Proportional
What are resistant and voltage to each other ?
Proportional
What are resistance and current to each other ?
Inversely proportional
Current is measured with an ammeter in series or in parallel ?
Series
Voltage is measured with a voltmeter in series or in parallel ?
Parrell
What characteristics are there in a series circuit ?
- each component is directly connected to the next
- each component receives a portion of the total voltage and the same current
- if one component fails all the other components in the circuit fails
- voltage is split between components depending on their resistance
Characteristics of a parallel circuit
- each component is on its own circuit
- if one component fails all of the other components are unaffected
- each component receives a portion of the total current and the same voltage
- The current splits at Junctions
Current in a series circuit is…
The same
Current in a parallel circuit is…
Split
Voltage in a series circuit is…
Split
Voltage in a parallel circuit is…

What is an LDR ?
Light dependent resistor
What is a thermistor ?
A temperature dependent resistor
What are resistance and brightness to each other ?
Inversely proportional
What is resistance and temperature to each other ?
Inversely proportional
What is a diode ?
A diode only allows current to flow in One Direction because it has a high resistance
What is the experiment for diodes, filament bulb, and resistor ?
Using ammeter and measuring the current with and without these components or with different voltage levels using a volt meter
