Momentum Flashcards
What is momentum?
Momentum is the product of Mass and Velocity
-momentum can have both positive and negative values
Momentum equation
Momentum= mass x velocity
P=mv
The momentum of an object will change when?
- When the mass changes
- When the speed changes (acceleration, deceleration)
- when the direction changes (momentum is a vector)
Conservation of Momentum is?
The momentum of any amount of objects before (an interaction) is the same as after.
- this happens/is correct in a closed system
-external forces acting on an object can change this
Momentum equation is?
F=△M
_____
△T
Force= change in momentum
_______________________
change in time
If a force acting on an object causes it to (a), then it will cause a change in (b)
a- accelerate or decelerate
b- momentum
What are safety features on cars?
- Crumple zones: crumple on impact, increasing time taken for car to stop
- Seatbelts: stretch, increase time for wearer to stop
- Airbags: compressing air, increase time to hit dashboard
