Moments + Stability COPY Flashcards
Moment equation
Moment = force x distance to the pivot
Unit for moments
Newton - metre
If the sum of the clockwise moments equal the sum of the anti clockwise moments on an object, the object will not rotate
–
Factors that affect the objects stability
The base area of an object
The weight of the base of an object
What is the centre of mass
The centre of gravity of an object is the point through which the whole weight of the object seems to act
How to find the centre of mass
Let the card hang freely from a large pun stuck into a cork; clamp the cork in a clamp stand. Hang your plum line from the same pin.
Mark the position of the plumbline by two crosses on the card. Join the crosses with a straight line drawn with a ruler.
Just as the plumbline hangs with its centre of gravity below the pivot, so also will the card. This means at the centre of gravity of the card is somewhere on the line you have marked.
To find out exactly where it is, do the process again but 90* the other way. Where these two lines meet is the centre of gravity
Moment of a force about a point
Force x perpendicular distance of the pivots from the line of action of the force
