moments Flashcards
what is the moment
the turning effect of a force is called the moment
what is the relationship between moments, turning force and perpendicular distance from the force to the pivot
moment = turning force x perpendicular distance from the force to the pivot. m = f x d
if an object is not turning, what does this mean about the moments
if an object is not turning, the total clockwise moment must be exactly balanced by the total anticlockwise moment about any pivot.
what can simple levers be used as
simple levers can be used as force multipliers
what happens if the line of action of the weight of an object lies outside the base of the object (and give an example)
if the line of action of the weight of an object lies outside the base of the object there will be a resultant moment and the body will topple. (examples include vehicles and simple balancing toys)
