Mollusk Questions Flashcards
For what purpose do mollusks use their muscular foot?
Mollusks use their muscular foot for moving, attachment and feeding., in
cephalopods, this muscular foot is adapted as tentacles.
How is the muscular foot of a squid different from that of clams and snails?
The muscular foot of the squid is modified as arms and tentacles and attached to the head that aid in movement wheres the clam can burrow into the sand with its muscular foot (locomotion) and the muscular foot of the snail secretes mucus along the base of the foot on which the snail glides slowly.
What is a mantle and where is it located in most mollusks?
the mantle covers the major organs and it is located on the out part of the animal (skin)
What is contained in the visceral mass?
The visceral mass contains the internal organs which include the digestive,
reproductive and circulatory organs and a mantle that surrounds but does not
cover entirely the visceral mass and secretes a shell.
How do most sessile and burrowing mollusks obtain food?
Most Sessile and burrowing mollusks obtain their food by filter-feeding. For
For example in bivalves, the cilia bring water and gills to obtain food (oxygen).
What kind of digestive tract do mollusks have?
Mollusks have a complete digestive tract including mouth and anus separately.
How do the nervous systems of clams and octopuses differ?
Clams do not have a brain but possess simple organs and nerve cords
for foot and muscle movement whereas the octopuses have a highly developed
brain, with an extensive network of nerves and eyes
How do mollusks reproduce; sexually, asexually, or both?
The mollusks reproduce sexually and some species are hermaphrodites which
mean that the individuals are capable of forming both sperms and eggs except
snails.
Where does fertilization take place in mollusks?
Fertilization in mollusks takes place either internally or externally.
Fertilization takes place internally in cephalopods and some gastropods and
externally in bivalves and some gastropods.
- Describe how land snails carry out respiration.
They have a special cavity inside their mantle that is lined with blood vessels and
acts as a lung. Therefore, they carry out the respiration process through those
lungs. This is called the respiratory pore (or pneumostome)
Why can bivalves be used to measure water quality?
Bivalves are filter feeders if the water quality is bad bivalves will have high
concentrations of pollutants in the body and hence they won’t be able to survive.
Therefore, a lack of bivalves in a certain area is a good indication that there is
pollution in that area and more of the ocean life is at risk. Hence, they can be
used to measure the water quality this way.
Describe how squid move.
Squid utilize a siphon to force out water from their mantle cavity. This process
acts as a form of jet propulsion through the water.
List two ways that bivalves protect themselves.
The two ways by which bivalves protect themselves are-:
● Hold shell very tightly closed with strong muscles.
● Swim away by snapping their shells.
Compare an open circulatory system to a closed circulatory system
In an open circulatory system, the blood works its way through the body
tissues in spaces called sinuses instead of in blood vessels whereas in the
closed circulatory system the blood moves through the body enclosed
entirely in a series of blood vessels, provide an efficient means of gas and
nutrient exchange within the
info
Most bivalves use external fertilization. The muscles in a snail move in a rippling wave to move the snail forward. The class of mollusks with the most highly developed nervous system is the cephalopods. The rough tongue-shaped structure by which snails and slugs feed is the radula.
