what is molluscum contagiosum caused by?
A
molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV) - member of the poxiviridae family

how is the molluscum contagiosum virus transmitted?
A
- directly by close personal contact
- indirectly via fomites (contaminated surfaces) - shared towels and flannels

what is the aetiology of molluscum contagiosum?
A
- children (max incidence = aged 1-4)
- atopic eczema

what is the typical cutaneous presentation of molluscum contagiosum?
A
- pinkish or pearly white papules with a central umbilication
- up to 5mm in diameter
- appear in clusters - commonly on trunk and flexures

what self-care advice should be given to patients with molluscum contagiosum?
A
- spontaneous resolution occurs within 18 months
- avoid sharing towels, clothing and baths
- do not scratch lesions
- exclusion from school, gym or swimming is not necessary

when should a patient with molluscum contagiosum be referred?
A
- HIV +ve with extensive lesions
- eyelid-margin or ocular lesions
- anogenital lesions
