Molecular Polarity vs Bond Polarity Flashcards

Q

How to show polarity in a bond

A

To show polarity in a bond, we can use δ- and δ+ symbols which
represent partial negative and positive charges or +–>
representing a dipole moment. The head of arrow points to more electronegative atom

Q

Molecules can be non-polar when bonds are polar

A

This is because the dipole moment (basically vectors) cancel each other out by going in opposite directions. Bonds are polar when you subtract electronegativities. Molecules are polar based on dipole moments
