Lewis Structure Flashcards

1
Q

Why do only C,N, O, F handle 8 electrons in valence shell and no more during COVALENT BONDING

A

Because they are so small that they cannot accommodate more than 8 electrons

Q

Deficient octet- Coordinate bond

A

since their valence shells have capacity for 8 electrons, when they are brought in contact with an atom or molecule with one or more lone pairs, they form more bonds to complete the octet. This type of covalent bonding, where both shared electrons are both contributed by one of the two atoms is called coordinate covalent bond.
