Stressors
Common sources or causes of stress
Stress
A psychological state that occurs wen you fell you don’t have the resources to cope with a stressor
Fight/flight
I face of a threatening event brain registers the event in the sympathetic branch. Give you energy to fight the event
General adaption syndrome
Phase 1:fight:flight
Phase 2: resistance, body is better able to handle the stressor
Phase 3: body runs out of the energy and resources
What was wrong with Hans selyes theory
Thought all chronic stress lead to the same result for everyone
Lazarus’ appraisal model of stress
Whether we experience stress depends on our cognitive appraisal of the event and the resources we have to deal with it.
Physiological
Changes
Chronic inflammation, higher blood pressure. Greater likelihood of heart disease illness and stroke
Psychoneuroimmunology
Chronic stress often reduces the ability of the immune system to fight illness
Type A response to stress
More susceptible to negative effects of stress including vulnerability to heart disease with anger and hostility being primary factors
Emotion focused coping
Deal with emotions caused by stress
Problem focused coping
Deal directly with the stressor
Received support
The amount of assistance individuals receive
Perceived support
Amount of assistance individuals believe is available to them
Why does exercise help
Strengthens the heart and lowers blood pressure. Boosts endorphins which enhance well being
