Module Seven Flashcards
What is the phony layer?
When a person reacts to self in stereotypical ways
What is a phobic layer?
Avoiding emotional pain associated with seeing ourselves the way we really are
What is the impasse layer?
Where we are stuck in our own maturation
What is the implosive layer?
Exposing our defenses and beginning to make contact with our authentic self
What is the explosive layer?
Releasing an enormous amount of energy as we let go of our phony roles and pretenses
How do the layers to self apply to counselling?
Counsellors should help the client at the impasse level, help develop awareness, help them face internal resistance, and avoid rushing the clients past the first three levels.
What are the five layers to self?
Phony
Phobic
Impasse
Implosive
Explosive
What are the five defences?
Introjection
Projection
Retroflection
Deflection
Confluence
What is introjection?
Being a follower. Accepting others beliefs and standards without assimilating them to make them align with who you are.
Projection
Hypocritical behaviour; does to others what they accuse others of doing.
Retroflection
Punishing ourselves: doing to ourselves what we would like to do to others.
Deflection
Pretending we are not bothered by friends who are making fun of us. Asking more questions when asked a question. Avoider.
Confluence
Not asking other’s input because you assume everyone thinks like you do.
What does a confluent person look like?
Someone who has no boundaries between self and environment, can’t tell own feelings from others, people who use the term “we” a lot or speak on behalf of others.
Dialogue exercise
Integration and acceptance of the self. Role play helps to become aware of both sides of a conflict.
Sharing hunches
Sharing feelings and perceptions of others in a tentative manner.
Substitute phrase
Increases awareness of splitting off certain parts of their conscious experience to avoid acting responsibly: creating effective positive self-talk. Ex. “I” language.. substituting what and how for why.
Exaggeration
The client is encouraged to exaggerate a certain body movement feeling or thought that has manifested to intesify the experience. It allows the client to become more aware of personal defences. Ex. Exaggerate the sigh, write things larger.
Making the rounds
Members of the group go up to each other and make contact; clients learn to take risks and confront. Each member gives a statement of positive recognition.
Guided fantasy
Teaching clients how to become aware of their thinking in-the-moment and how their thinking affects them: role-play in the first person. Client must describe moment-to-moment thoughts.
Playing the projection
Role-play the person the client does not like. Clients make statements about others that are often projections of attributes they possess.
What is Perl’s main idea?
A person’s innate need is self-preservation and actualization. Awareness is the main goal.
How do you introduce an experiment with a client?
- Introduce the idea
- Share the pains and gains
- Explain the procedure
- Encourage in-the-mmoment language, spontaneity, and action
