Module One, Lecture Two Flashcards
Terminology
What is Homeostasis?
The process by which the body maintains a stable environment, or balance in response to external conditions
“Feedback” refers to what when talking about Homeostasis?
Controlled variable moves too far from the set point and responds to restore balance
“Feed Forward” refers to what when talking about Homeostasis?
A control system that anticipates and prepares for changes to the body’s internal environment
Describe the Anatomical Position
Upright, face and palms forward, feet together
What does Anterior mean?
The front or direction towards the front of the body
What does Posterior mean?
The back or direction towards the back of the body
What does Superior mean?
A position above or higher than another part of the body
What does Inferior mean?
A position below or lower than another part of the body
What does Medial mean?
The middle or direction toward the middle of the body
What does Lateral mean?
The side or direction toward the side of the body
What does Proximal mean?
A position in a limb that is nearer the point of attachment or trunk of the body
What does Distal mean?
A position in a limb that is farther from the point of attachment or the trunk of the body
What does Deep mean?
A position farther from the surface of the body
What does Superficial mean?
A position closer to the surface of the body
What are the three divisions of the body?
Sagital, Coronal, Transverse
What is the Sagitial Plane?
Divides the body into left and right ( straight down the median line )
What is the Coronal Plane?
Separates the front ( Anterior ) and the back ( Posterior )
What is the Transverse Plane?
Axial Plane; divides the body into upper ( Superior ) and lower ( Inferior ) halves
Bending a limb to decrease the angle at joint…
Flexion
Movement that increases the angle at a joint…
Extension
Bending your ankle so your foot and your toes move towards your shin…
Dorsiflextion
Bending the ankle so the foot pushes down and your toes point away…
Plantar Flexion
Moving your limbs laterally, away from the midline of the body…
Abduction
Moving your limbs medially, towards the midline of the body…
Adduction
Raising your scapular upward…
Elevation
Lowering your scapular downward…
Depression
Sole of your foot turns inward towards the midline of the body…
Inversion
Sole of your foot turns outwards away from the midline of the body…
Eversion
What is Rotation?
Rotating the torso or a limb around its vertical axis
What is Horizontal Abduction?
Moving the arm away from the midline of the body when it’s at a 90-degree angle in front of you
What is Horizontal Adduction?
Moving the arm toward the midline of the body when it’s at a 90-degree angle to the side
