Module One, Lecture One Flashcards
Introduction to HUBS191
What are the four types of tissue that make up the body?
Epithelium, Connective, Muscle and Nervous
What are the functions of Epithelium tissue?
Protection, controls permeability, sensation and secretion
What are the two forms of Epithelium Tissue?
Epithelia and Glands
What are two types of glands?
Exocrine and Endocrine
What are the functions of Connective Tissue?
Structure, transport of fluid and materials, organ protection, energy storage and microorganism defence
What are the three types of Connective Tissue?
Proper, Fluid and Supporting
What are the functions of Connective Tissue Proper?
Provides structural support and protection to the body
What are the two types of Connective Tissue Proper?
Loose and Dense
What are the two main fibres of Connective Tissue Proper?
Collagen and Elastic/Elastin
What are the functions of Collagen Fibres?
Provide strength and prevent tissue from tearing or separating
What are the functions of Elastic Fibres?
Responsible for the elasticity of organs
Ligaments and Tendons are what type of Connective Tissue Proper?
Dense
What type of Connective Tissue Proper is Adipose, and what does it do?
Loose fat tissue, stores energy
What are three important types of Loose Connective Tissue Proper?
Areolar tissue, Adipose tissue, Reticular tissue
What are the two types of Fluid Connective Tissue?
Blood and Lymph
What is the function of Blood?
Transport oxygenated red blood cells, as well as nutrients and waste products
What is the function of Lymph?
Maintain fluid levels, participates in immune response, contains white blood cells
What are the two main types of Supporting Connective Tissue?
Cartilage and Bone
FHAME is an acronym for what types of Cartilage?
Fibre, Hyaline, Articular, Meniscus, ELastic
What are the functions of Muscle Tissue?
Contraction and relaxation of the body
What are the three main types of Muscle Tissue
Skeletal, Smooth, Cardiac
What is the function of Skeletal Muscle Tissue?
Movement, posture, breathing, and energy storage
What is the function of Smooth Muscle Tissue?
Helps move things through the body without conscious control
What is the function of Cardiac Muscle Tissue?
Pumping action of the heart
Where is Skeletal Muscle Tissue found?
Attached to bones by tendons, also un the tongue. diaphragm, eye socket, and upper oesophagus
Where is Smooth Muscle Tissue found?
The walls of hollow organs, skin and eyes
Where is Cardiac Muscle Tissue found?
The walls of the heart
What is the function of Nervous Tissue?
Sending and receiving signals to coordinate bodily activities
What are the two cells found in Nervous Tissue?
Neurons and Glial Cells
What is the function of Neurons?
Send and receive signals, communication through electrical signals
What is the function of Glial Cells?
Provide a support system for the neurons
