Module One, Lecture Four Flashcards
Bone tissue and its Microscopic Structure
What are the two extracellular components of bone, and their percentages?
Organic 33% Inorganic 67%
What is the main organic component of bone tissue?
Collagen
What is the function of Collagen in Bone Tissue?
Acts as a structural framework, providing flexibility
How is collagen structured in bone tissue?
Long fibres of collagen sit in a ground substance called proteoglycans
What is the ground substances that collagen sits in?
Proteoglycans
What are the inorganic components of bones?
Hydroxyapatite + other Ca minerals ( mineral salts )
What is the function of the Inorganic Component of Bone Tissue?
Makes the bone hard and resistant to compression
What percentage of bone mass is given by cells?
2%
What are the four types of bone cells?
Osteogenic cells, Osteoblasts, Osteoclasts, Osteocytes
What is the role of Osteogenic cells?
Stem cells that produce osteoblasts
What is the function of osteoblasts?
Produce new bone matrix ( ossification )
What is the process of bone growth called?
Ossification
What is the function of Osteocytes?
Recycle protein and minerals from matrix
What is the function of Osteoclasts?
Remove bone matrix
What is the process of bone destruction called?
Osteolysis
What are the two types of Bone Tissue?
Compact & Cancellous
