Module 9: The Urinary System Flashcards
The urinary System
Includes: a pair of kidneys, ureter, bladder, and urethra
Anatomy of these structures is similar among different domestic species → except for the kidneys
The kidneys: appearance
Large variability in appearance in domestic species:
Dogs, cats, sheep, and goats → similar shaped kidneys = bean-like
Pigs → flattened kidneys
Horses → heart-shaped kidneys
Cattle → multilobulated kidneys
The kidneys: location
Located closer to the abdominal roof in the lumbar region
Generally: right kidney is more cranial than the left kidney
Also: right kidney is located very close to the liver → the liver has the renal fossa as the right kidney’s location
Renal fossa
A space in the liver where the right kidney is located
