Includes structures responsible for swallowing food, chewing, digestion, absorption and expelling waste
Via the alimentary canal aka the digestive tract

Includes the: mouth (tongue, teeth, and salivary glands), pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and anus
Mouth
The organ(s) of pretension → used for taking in food ?
cattle → use their tongue
horses → use their lips
Once in the mouth → the teeth (in the mandibles and the maxilla) grind it into finer particles
Teeth
Located in the mandibles and maxilla
Have 2 distinct parts (generally) = the crown and the root
Some have a “neck” at the gum line
Tooth = has several layers = enamel, dentin, and the pulp (pulp cavity)
Crown of the tooth
The part above the gum line
Root of the tooth
The part below the gum line
Enamel
Outermost layer of the tooth → covers the crown
Protects the tooth from damage by whatever the animal ‘ ingests, includingacidsproduced in the mouth
