Module 9 Terms Flashcards
a repeating disturbance that transfers energy as it travels through matter or space
wave
matter through which a wave travels
Medium
A wave that can only travel through matter
Mechanical wave
wave in which the matter in the medium moves at right angles to the direction of the wave, has crest and troughs
Transverse wave
A wave in which the matter in the medium moves back and forth along the direction that the wave travels
Longitudinal wave
Highest point of a wave
Crest
The lowest point on a transverse wave
Trough
denser region of a longitudinal wave
Compression
The less-dense region of a longitudinal wave
Rarefaction
Distance between one point on a wave and the nearest point just like it
Wavelength
The number of wavelengths that pass a fixed point each second
Frequency
A measure of the size of the disturbance of a wave, related to the energy that it carries
Amplitude
The bending of a wave caused by a change in its speed as it travels from one medium to another
Refraction
The bending of waves around and obstacle, can also occur when wave pass through a narrow opening
Diffraction
The process of two or more wave overlapping and combining to form a new wave
Interference
