Module 17 Terms Flashcards
element that is shiny, malleable, ductile, and a good conductor of heat and electricity.
Metal
property of metals and alloys that allows them to be hammered or rolled into thin sheets.
Malleable
property of metals and alloys that allows them to be drawn into wires.
Ductile
occurs because some electrons move freely among a metal’s positively charged ions, explains properties such as ductility and the ability to conduct electricity.
Metallic Bonding
element, such as radium, whose nucleus breaks down and emits particles and energy.
Radioactive Element
Elements in groups 3–12 of the modern periodic table and are further divided into transition metals and inner transition metals.
Transition elements
element that usually is a gas or brittle solid at room temperature, is not malleable or ductile, is a poor conductor of heat and electricity, and typically is not shiny.
nonmetal
a molecule that consists of two atoms of the same element, joined by a covalent bond.
diatomic molecule
element that shares some properties with metals and some with nonmetals.
metalloids
different molecular structures of the same element.
allotropes
material that conducts an electric current under certain conditions.
semiconductors
elements having more than 92 protons, all of which are synthetic and unstable.
transuranium elements
