Module 16 Terms Flashcards
the smallest particle of an element that still retains the properties of the element.
Atom
the small, positively charged center of an atom, contains protons and neutrons.
nucleus
tiny atomic particle that has mass and a positive electric charge.
proton
tiny atomic particle that is electrically neutral and has about the same mass as a proton.
neutron
tiny atomic particle with little mass and a negative electric charge; an atom’s electrons are equal in number to its protons and are located in a cloudlike region surrounding the nucleus.
electron
area around the nucleus of an atom where the atom’s electrons are most likely to be found.
electron cloud
particle of matter that makes up protons and neutrons.
quark
number of protons contained in an atom’s nucleus.
atomic number
combined number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
mass number
an atom of an element that has a different mass number than the element but the same chemical properties
isotope
weighted-average mass of an element’s isotopes according to their natural abundance
average atomic mass
organized list of all known elements that are arranged by increasing atomic number and by changes in chemical and physical properties
periodic table
The amount of time it takes one wavelength to pass a fixed point, expressed in seconds
period
vertical column in the periodic table
group
uses the symbol for an element and dots representing the number of electrons in the element’s outer energy level
