Module 10 Terms Flashcards
snail-Shaped, inner ear structure filled with fluid and lined with hair cells
( Generates nerve impulses sent to the brain through the auditory nerve)
Cochlea
Tough membrane in the outer ear that is about 0.1 mm thick and transmits sound vibrations into the middle ear
Eardrum
amount of energy that flows through a certain area in a specific amount of time
Intensity
Human perception of sound volume, depends primarily on intensity
Loudness
Unit for sound intensity
Decibel
Perception of how high or low a sound is
Pitch
Change in the wave frequency that occurs due to the relative motion of the wave as it moves toward or away from an observer
Doppler Effect
collection of sound deliberately used in a regular pattern
Music
Result of the differance between sounds having the same pitch and loudness
Sound quality
Vibration whose frequency is a multiple of the fundamental frequency
Overtone
Hollow air-filled chamber that amplifies sound when the air inside it vibrates
Resonator
process by which objects are located by emitting sounds and interpreting the sound waves that are reflected from those objects.
Echolocation
use of sound waves to detect and measure objects underwater.
