Symphony
-A work for orchestra in several sections, called movements
Sinfonia
- A short overture that was heard at the beginning of the 17th-Century Italian opera
- Means sounding together because symphony, is always written for a small orchestra never just for one or two insturments
Italian Symphonies were written in movements
-First movement ~Fast -Second movement ~Slow (more lyrical) -Third movement ~Fast
Classical Period
- Lasted from the mid 18th-Century to the early 19th-Century
- Symphonies were first developed during this time

Sonata-allegro form
-Two main musical themes with contrasting characters
Exposition
-Introduces the two musical themes, usually two contrasting melodies
Development
-The two themes wander around a musical landscape undergoing various musical transformations
Recapitulation
-The two themes are re-introduced to round out the musical narrative
