Module 9 Flashcards
Colloids?
They are milky, opaque, cant filter and does not seperate (ex. milk, butter etc)
Solutions?
transparent, ant filter, does not seperate, light
Solute vs Solvent
solute - the dissolved
solvent the substance it dissolves in
“like dissolves like”
similar molecular forces form solutions
ex. i2 and ccl4 bc non polar
Henry’s Law states
solubilityt of gas is directionally proportionate to the partial pressure of gas at constant temperature
Does pressure have effect on liquids and solids?
no
Electrolytes formed
when ions are in the water - charged
Solvation is..
when clsuter of solvent molecules surround a dissolved solute molecule or ion
What does a saturated solution contain?
It contains the max amount of solute in the solvent at equillibrium
What is miscible?
it means that it is mutually soluble in all proportions
What are the properties of solutions?
Colligative property - solitions property based on the number of dissolved particles, NOT chemical identity
- vapor pressure is lower for solutions than pure solvents
- Boiling point is higher for a solution than a pure solvent
- Freezing point is lower for a solution than a pure solvent
- Osmosis occurs when it is seperated from a pure solvent by a semi permeable membrane
