Module 1 Flashcards
What is Chemistry
the study of nature, properties, and transformation of matter
What is matter?
The physical material that makes up the universe, so anything in the world has mass and occupies space
Scientific Method
A systematic process of observation, hypothesis and experiment used to expand knowledge an refine a body of knowledge
Define physical change
a change that does not affect the chemical properties of a substance or object.
Define chemical change
a change that alters the chemical makeup of a substance - they create a new substance with properties that different than the original substance
When sugar dissolves in water, is it chemical or physical ?
Physical because they both remain the same identity
When sugar is heated into caramel, is it physical or chemical?
it is chemical because the sugar melts and darkens and thickens - the color and consistency changes than the original sugar.
What is a solid?
has definite shape and volume
What is a liquid?
has definite volume and assumes the shape of container
What is gas?
Neither definite volume or shape
Define state of matter
a state which a substance is - solid, iquid or gas
Change of state means..
changing the state from s, l or g (whatever it converts to)
What is a pure substance?
has a uniform chemical composition entirely
What is a mixture?
A combination of 2 + substances that retains its chemical identity
Homogenous mixture is?
A uniform mixture that has the same composition entirely
Heterogenous mixture is?
A non-uniform mixture that has different compositions in different regions
Define element
An element is a fundamental substance that cannot be broken down into a simplier form
Define chemical compound
a pure substance that is able to be broken down into simpler substances through a chemical reaction
What is a reactant
the starting substance that undergoes change
What is a product
what is formed at the end of a chemical reaction
what is mass
the measure of the amount of matter within an object
what is weight
the measure of gravitational force of the earth or other bodies that exerts force on an object
Energy is..
the capacity to do work or supply heat
Temperature is…
the measure of the amount of heat energy within an object
Conversion factor of K to Celsius and vice versa
K to C = C + 273.15
C to L = K - 273.15
Conversion fact of Farenheit to Celsius and vice versa
1.8 x 32 F (C to F)
C / 1.8 x (f - 32f) (F to C)
What is density?
the physical property that relates to the mass of an object to its volume - mass per unit of volume
What is specific gravity
the density of substances divided by the density of water at the same temperature
