Module 8 Flashcards
METABOLISM
What is metabolism and how is it divided?
Metabolism is the total of all chemical reactions in the cell. It is divided into two parts: Catabolism and Anabolism
What is Catabolism?
Type of metabolism where larger, more complex molecules are broken down into smaller, simpler molecules with the release of energy
What do the Catabolism compounds do once broken down?
- Generate/conserve energy
- Provide a ready source of reducing power
- Generate precursors for biosynthesis
What is Anabolism?
A type of metabolism that involves the synthesis of complex molecules from simpler ones, requiring an input of energy.
** fueling reactions in metabolism
** cells need to work to live
A chemical reaction is at equilibrium when:
the rate of the forward reaction = the rate of the reverse reaction
What does the equilibrium constant (K) express?
It expresses the equilibrium concentrations of products and reactants to one another
