Module 8 Flashcards
Define gene.
Segment of DNA that codes for a protein.
Define dominant.
Trait or gene that is expressed (capital letter).
Define recessive.
Hidden gene or trait (lowercase letter).
Define allele.
Variation or versions of a gene.
Define homozygous.
Identical pair of alleles.
Define HETEROzygous.
Two DIFFERENT alleles
Define genotype.
Genetic makeup/combination of alleles.
Define PHenotype.
PHysical expression of the gene.
Explain autosomal traits.
Carried on AUTOSOMES. Recessive inheritance=TWO copies of alleles are required to express phenotype. Dominant=only ONE allele is required to express phenotype.
What are multiple alleles?
Multiple versions of a gene (more than two).
What is codominance?
Both alleles are expressed in heterozygous individuals.
What is sex-linked inheritance?
Determined by genes on the X chromosome (more common in biological males).
